Procedures and Rules
The following procedures and rules should be followed to at all times:
Protective Cover: Always transport your iPad in its protective cover. Whether it be from room to room, or home at night. Never carry the iPad without the case. They are VERY slippery and can easily slide out of your arms. High School students may use their own cover, however they should be aware that any damage that occurs to the iPad, may result in a charge. Always use at least one (if not both) of the elastic straps
Cleaning your iPad: Only use a soft dry cloth on your iPad and gently wipe the screen making sure not to push hard on the screen or buttons. Never use any chemicals (glass cleaner, disinfectant wipers), or compressed (canned) air to clean your iPad. If you feel it needs some special attention, please put in a student ticket and we will take a look at it for you.
Storing your iPad when not in use: Never leave your iPad in a vehicle in plain sight or in the sun. Place it in the trunk or other area out of site only when the weather is at a fairly normal temperature. Extreme temperatures (those under 32º or over 95º) may cause serious damage to the iPad. Humidity also plays a factor in damaging the iPad. Keep it in a fairly moderate temperature without exposing it to extreme dampness.
Treat your iPad as if it were your prized possession: Do not use food or drink around the iPad. Keep it on a separate surface. Liquid spills on the iPad can cause serious problems. Do not PRESS DOWN HARD on the screen. The iPad responds to a gentle touch so there is no need to tap hard or push on the screen. Keep the screen, outside aluminum case and other parts of the laptop clean and free from grease, food, and other debris.
Do NOT sync your iPad to any computer, mobile phone or other device: Your iPad has been set up and issued to you by Western School District. You are not allowed to sync it to any other device. The iPad is synced to a district computer and this will cause conflicts.
Do NOT reset your iPad: When you reset the iPad, you will lose all apps. and configurations set up by Western School District. Our managements system will alert us that the iPad has not "checked in" and we will have to wipe and reinstall the apps.
Classroom Rules: Each teacher will establish their own rules for use in the classroom. Many teachers are establishing gestures or signals (hands up in the air - means stop working and eyes on the teachers) for you to follow. We understand the iPads are exciting to use, but you must follow directions in class as each teacher uses them in a different way. Failure to adhere to the rules, may result in losing the privilege of using your iPad for a day or more or even face a reset of the device.
Saving Your Work: Always back up your work. It can be to Google Drive® or Dropbox®. If your iPad should require service, you will lose anything that isn't out in the "Cloud" or backed up (saved in another location).
Images and Sounds/Music: Remember that we need to respect copyrighted material when using images, sound effects or music from the internet. There are links to sites that are free to use on the "Students" - "General Resources" page of this site. Just because you can drag and drop from a site (like Google Images) doesn't necessarily mean you have authorization to use the file. Most sites have a section where you can read the restrictions over use (sometimes called "Terms of Use", "License", "Terms and Conditions" or something similar). Read this before using the images. Most sites allow free use for educators and learners (students), but you need to verify that is the case. Remember you may not post these photos to a webpage, sell or even create an online photo collection even when the images are free to use.
Charge Your iPad: When you arrive at school each day, your iPad should have a full charge. When fully charged, the iPad should easily last all day in school. Remember, closing out of apps. (double-tap the home button to see what is running) that you are not using, conserves a lot of battery power. Always make sure you gently insert the charger into the iPad, never twist or force it into place. Also never rest your iPad (while charging) in an area where it can fall or the power cord can become trapped and damaged inside or next to something. The power cord may become warm when it is charging so leave it in an open and well ventilated area.
Appropriate Use of the Internet: Even though some searches are purely innocent, if your search results in pulling up a site with inappropriate material, promptly close the site. Be very aware of sites that have ads, sites that ask you to click to join or sign up for a membership, or sites that offer free trials. NEVER give out any of your personal information or answer questions about yourself or others. Legitimate sites do not require you to enter your date of birth, name, address, or other private information. Use caution and ask a teacher or other adult if you aren't sure how to handle something. If anything pops up that seems odd or asks for your password or other personal information, ask an adult before doing anything.
Social Media Sites: There are specific age requirements for using common social media sites. Never sign up for something or enter a site that requires you to be of a certain age, if you are not that age. Also, never publish personal information about yourself, others or members of your family on these sites. There is no need to put your address, date of birth, phone numbers, or other personal information on these sites. Those who know you, already have that information, and those who don't may misuse it. Remember that once something is posted, you can't take it back. Even if you remove it, it has already been seen and/or downloaded by others.
Passwords: Passwords for email, Edmodo and other sites are assigned for a reason. It is to limit access to an individual person. NEVER give your password to anyone. There is no need to share passwords or allow someone else to use your laptop or password to access anything. If you forget your password and need it reset, you may enter a ticket or come to the library/media center to have your password reset. If you need your Gmail (school email) password reset, you may enter a ticket. Please remember to check the ticket status or messages often to know when the password is reset.
