Parent Expectations
Why we issued your student a district iPad® and how we expect it to be used.
Your Western High School and/or Middle School student will be issued a district iPad® for their PERSONAL EDUCATIONAL use for the 2013-2014 school year. They will use it at school and take it home (if you chose option 1 or 2) to use for homework or extended learning. They will be able to use it on any wireless network that is available (WiFi) at your home or a local restaurant, library or other WiFi location (any public or private [if they know the password] network).
Your student should be the ONLY one to use the iPad®, however we encourage them to show you how they are using the device to learn at school, online and with all of the great applications installed on the device. It is NOT intended for any siblings to use or for use as a family device.
When other people use the device (since the student assigned to that iPad® is responsible for anything done on or to it) you are setting your student up for potential problems.
Your student will be instructed on how to use the iPad® in each class by that individual teacher. They are expected to follow each teacher's rules for use while in their class. They will be given direction on how to access the teacher's Edmodo page or Google Docs™ for assignments, quizzes, turning in work and to access links. They have also been issued a Gmail™ account to use here in school to communicate with other students or their teachers. Students in 6th - 9th grade will not be able to use it with the "outside" world. This prevents SPAM and other potentially harmful emails from coming in. They can ONLY communicate with those in the "closed loop" of Western School District. Students in 10th - 12th grades will be able to use their Gmail account outside of the school system.
Since this is a $500.00 device, we are teaching your student how to properly use, care for and transport it from school to home and back again. During the day, students are expected to follow individual classroom rules, carry the iPad® in its protective cover at all times, and adhere to Good Digital Citizenship. The failure to do so could result in suspension of iPad® privileges (either going home or even for use during the school day) as a disciplinary action. The rules are made very clear in the iPad® Handbook, this website, the WSD Technology Honor Code for Secondary Students and in presentations or trainings with their Administrators, Teachers and Tech Support Staff.
We hope to make this a very positive and enriching experience for our students and appreciate your support, both as a community in funding this project through the Bond Issue of 2012 and as a concerned parent who works with us as a partner to reinforce proper use and behavior while using this expensive piece of educational equipment.
