Integration
21st Century Skills
Students are gaining expertise in Employability Skills every day. These include problem solving, creative thinking, organizational skills, communication and teamwork. Through the use of technology, students are creating projects in various applications, collaborating with each other on videos, podcasts and presentations. They are communicating with teachers and students in Edmodo or other online groups and learning to manage their workload with various tools. As a result, students will be prepared to enter a higher learning institution or the workplace and put those skills directly into use. No longer are we bound by teaching the three "R's" in a conventional classroom, but we have evolved into an interactive, always-on educational platform where learning doesn't stop at the end of the school day.
Individual School Plans
Western Middle School
Western Middle School was the first school to issue laptops to their students. Once the students had their laptops, the process of integrating the new technology as a learning tool began. Two middle school classrooms ran a pilot program starting in late November, 2012. These students were instructed on the care, proper use, and troubleshooting procedures for their laptop. They were introduced to many new applications and learning tools. They use their laptops in class, view prep materials for the following day or work on projects at home (with files they save to their laptop during the school day). They were also provided with an AC adapter cord to recharge their laptop each night. The laptop is carried in a protective case from class to class and home each night. Students can access the internet for extended learning opportunities at any public WiFi location. In February - March of 2013, the rest of the students at Western Middle School received their laptops. They will use them until early June, when they will turn them in.
Students received an iPad, AC adapter cord, and a protective cover in the fall of 2013 and will be issued an iPad® for this next school year.
Western High School
Western High School began their initiative in the fall of 2013 with a roll out of iPads® to students. Students will receive an iPad®, AC adapter cord, and a protective cover. They will be issued devices again for this next school year.
Elementary Schools
Teachers were issued staff laptops in February - March 2013. Some teachers have been using iPads® in their classrooms to help students learn in a more dynamic way. iPads®, MacBook Airs® and PC's will be issued for classroom use in centers. Students will experience the use of technology in small groups beginning their experience in collaboration, investigation and learning to use iPads®.
